J and O's Story

When I first started seeking a Russian wife it wasn’t wholeheartedly. I had a friend who raved about a woman he had met over one of the international sites, and how sincere she was. To me the sincerity was important, as I was recently separated from my first wife, and my experience with Western women was really jading me. So, I halfheartedly joined a couple of the international dating sites. In the mean time I continued to date (if you could call it that) Canadian women. My dating experience was really starting to upset me, and I started getting more serious about writing the Russian ladies.

Well, I wrote a few of them – I’m not even sure how many. But I do know that I looked through hundreds, if not thousands, of profiles. And at least there were a lot of ladies to look at and contact. Some of them never responded to my emails. A couple were obvious scammers right from the start, and a few I wrote several letters to. Then I saw the profile of Olga. I almost didn’t write her, because she was only 21 years old – that was 14 years younger than I was. I had to be crazy to think of such a big age gap. But I wrote her a letter. For two weeks I never heard from her.

Then I got a letter that was very enthusiastic, explaining that she had been away on a business trip to Moscow, and it even had a picture of her there. Her letter was reasonably long, and had some nice details of her life, but it wasn’t pushy, and it was simple to read, even if the English wasn’t perfect. So, I wrote back the next day. Shockingly, she wrote me within a day or two.

Her letters were always in-depth, thoughtful, and intriguing. She had a strong mind and was fairly articulate in her writing. This piqued my interest quite a bit. We continued our correspondence for a few months this way, with the occasional phone call in there, too. We found that we had a lot of beliefs and interests in common. Then I suggested that I come visit her. So I did! Silly as it sounds, I proposed to her on my third day there. She accepted right away. Five months later we were married in Bishkek.

For me the marriage was quite confusing, as I didn’t speak any Russian, and the whole affair was quite elaborate (much more so than what I would have had in Canada). Immediately after the wedding we went on our honeymoon, and had a wonderful time. Olga was still insecure about me, even though we were married, but she lost that on the honeymoon when she saw that I was only interested in her for sure… I had disappeared to put on my glasses and remove my contact lenses, because my eyes were bothering me. At that time she was afraid that I was maybe hooking up with another woman who had been giving me the eye earlier. I wasn’t gone that long, but it did make Olga nervous. She realized that I wouldn’t do that when I was completely puzzled by her reaction and offense that I had gone to put on my glasses. When she saw them, she apologized, and everything went well after that.

The vacation was too short, and ended in a lot of tears as I flew back to Canada. We spent a lot of time on the phone from there on. I called her almost every day. I think the longest time of my life was the seven months I had to wait for her to come to Canada after we were married. We’ve been married for five years now and have two amazing children!
